How do I find my Wi-Fi password?
Guests asking, a new device to connect, or setting up a smart speaker. The Wi-Fi password always seems to come up when you least remember it. Here is where to find yours.
First check the sticker on your router. If that password no longer works, look it up on a device that is already connected, like the laptop or phone that is using the Wi-Fi right now. Both Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android can show the current Wi-Fi password in their settings.
Prefer to have someone just handle this? We can find your Wi-Fi password, reset it if needed, and reconnect all your devices during a single visit. Give us a call.
Start with the router sticker
Most routers have a small sticker on the bottom, side or back with the original Wi-Fi network name and password printed on it. Look for labels like "Wi-Fi Key", "Wireless Password", "Network Key" or "WPA". If no one has changed the password since the router was installed, this is still the right one.
If the sticker password does not work, it has been changed by you or by someone who set up the router for you. Move on to the next option.
Look it up on a device that is already connected
If any phone or computer in the house is currently on the Wi-Fi, you can almost always view the password from there. You do not need to reset anything.
On a Windows computer
Open Control Panel, go to Network and Sharing Center, click on the Wi-Fi connection name, click Wireless Properties, open the Security tab, and tick "Show characters". The password appears in the box next to "Network security key". You may need to confirm you are an administrator.
On a Mac
Open the Passwords app (or on older Macs, the Keychain Access app), search for the Wi-Fi network name, click on it, and tick "Show password". You will be asked to type your Mac login password to confirm. The Wi-Fi password then appears in the box.
On an iPhone or iPad
On iOS 16 or later, open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, tap the small blue "i" next to the network you are on, then tap the hidden Password field. Use Face ID or your passcode to reveal it. You can then tap Copy or just read it.
On an Android phone
The exact path depends on your phone brand, but it is usually Settings, Connections or Network, Wi-Fi, tap the current network, and look for a Share or QR Code option. The password is either shown directly or appears above the QR code image.

We can find your Wi-Fi password and reconnect every device in the house during one visit across Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa.
Book a VisitCheck your provider's app
If your internet comes from Rogers, Bell, TekSavvy or another local provider, they often have an app that shows your Wi-Fi network name and password. Open the app, sign in with your account, and look for a Wi-Fi or Network section. This is especially useful if your provider's engineer set up the router for you and you never wrote the password down.
What to do if none of the above works
If the sticker password is wrong, nothing is already connected, and your provider's app does not show it, the last option is to reset the router to factory defaults. This puts the original sticker password back but also disconnects every device from the network and removes any settings that have been changed. You will then have to reconnect everything. If you would rather not do this yourself, we handle it during a Wi-Fi setup visit and reconnect all the devices for you so nothing gets left behind.
When to call us instead
Call us if the sticker password does not work and no devices are connected, if you are worried about pressing the reset button, or if your provider's app is asking for login details you no longer have. These are common requests we handle during visits in Durham Region homes.
If the reason you are looking up the password is because the Wi-Fi is acting up anyway, our slow Wi-Fi guide and dropping Wi-Fi guide are worth a look.

Common questions about Wi-Fi passwords
- I changed my Wi-Fi password years ago and cannot remember it. What now?
If you have at least one device still connected to the Wi-Fi, you can usually look the password up there without having to reset anything. If every device has been disconnected, a full router reset is the last resort. We can handle either option during a visit.
- Is the password on the router sticker the real one?
Only if you or someone else has not changed it since the router was first installed. Most providers in Durham Region ship routers with the original password printed on a sticker on the side or underneath. If that password no longer works, it has been changed at some point.
- Can I see my Wi-Fi password on my phone?
On newer iPhones (iOS 16 and later) and on most Android phones, you can view the password for a Wi-Fi network you are already connected to. The exact steps depend on the phone but it is usually in Settings, Wi-Fi, then tap the current network.
