Why is my iPhone battery draining so fast?

A phone that runs out of battery by lunchtime is miserable. The cause is almost always one of a small number of things, and most of them are quick fixes.

Quick Answer

First check your battery health in Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging. If the "Maximum Capacity" number is under 80 percent, the battery itself is worn out and needs replacing. If it is above 80 percent, one of the settings below is the culprit.

Not sure where to find any of these settings? That is fine. We go through them with you during a visit and leave your phone lasting longer. Give us a call.

The six most common battery drains

Work through this checklist. Fix anything you recognise and your battery should be noticeably better within a day.

Screen brightness too high

The screen is the single biggest battery drain on any phone. Open Settings, Display & Brightness, and turn down the slider. Better still, turn on Auto-Brightness so the phone adjusts itself. Just this one change can add hours.

Background App Refresh is on for everything

Apps can quietly refresh themselves in the background even when you are not using them. Open Settings, General, Background App Refresh, and either turn the whole thing off or only leave it on for apps you actually need updated constantly (like Weather or Messages).

Location Services for apps that do not need it

Apps checking your location burn battery. Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services. Go through the list and change any app you do not need tracking you to "Never" or "While Using". Keep Maps and similar apps on, of course.

Old battery wearing out

iPhone batteries lose capacity over time. After two or three years of daily use they often drop below 80 percent, which is when you start noticing the drain. Check Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging. If the number is low, a battery swap at Apple is far cheaper than a new phone.

Push email checking every minute

If your email is set to "Push", the phone checks for new messages constantly. Change it to "Fetch" every 15 or 30 minutes (Settings, Mail, Accounts, Fetch New Data). You still get your mail, the battery just lasts longer.

Weak mobile signal

When the phone has a poor signal, it cranks up its radio to try to stay connected, and the battery drops fast. If you spend hours in a spot with no signal, turning on Airplane Mode while you are there stops the phone exhausting itself looking for a signal.

Book a Visit

A couple of quick extras

Turning on Low Power Mode (Settings, Battery) when you get to 50 percent gives you extra hours for the rest of the day without changing anything else. Restarting the phone once a week also helps, as it clears up any app that has got stuck using power in the background.

If your iPhone has not been updated in a while, that can also cause odd battery behaviour. Our iPhone update guide walks through the steps safely.

When to call us instead

Call us if your battery health is below 80 percent and you do not want to arrange a repair yourself, if your phone is getting warm while you are not using it (which usually means something is stuck running), or if it suddenly started draining fast after an update or a new app. We handle this during phone help visits across Durham Region.

FAQ

Common questions about iPhone battery life

How long should an iPhone battery last in a day?

A healthy iPhone battery will last a full day of normal use, from morning to bedtime, on a single charge. If yours is struggling to make it past mid-afternoon, something is using too much power or the battery itself is worn out.

How do I know if my iPhone battery is worn out?

Open Settings, tap Battery, then tap Battery Health & Charging. The "Maximum Capacity" number tells you how much life the battery has left. Anything under 80 percent is considered worn and is the most likely reason for fast draining.

Can you replace an iPhone battery?

We do not replace iPhone batteries ourselves, but we can check the battery health, book you a proper Apple replacement, and set the phone up again afterwards so nothing is lost. Replacement is usually much cheaper than a new phone.
