Why won't my laptop turn on?

A laptop that refuses to start is one of the most stressful tech moments there is. Do not panic. The fix is often something simple, and your files are almost always still safe.

Quick Answer

First make sure the charger is actually working (try a different wall socket). Then do a hard reset: unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 full seconds, plug the charger back in, and try again. This clears the most common cause of a laptop that refuses to start.

Worried about making things worse? That is a sensible instinct. We rescue unresponsive laptops in Durham Region homes every week and your files are almost always recoverable. Give us a call.

Work through these in order

Try each of these steps one at a time and stop as soon as the laptop starts. Do not skip ahead.

1

Check the charger first

Plug the charger into a different wall socket and make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends. Look at the laptop for a small charging light near the power connector. If the light comes on, the charger is working. If no light appears at any socket, the charger itself may have failed. Chargers are one of the most common parts to wear out, and replacing one is much cheaper than replacing a laptop.

2

Do a proper hard reset

Unplug the charger. Hold the power button down for a full 30 seconds. Let go, plug the charger back in, and press the power button once normally. This drains any leftover power from the laptop's circuits and clears the state it was stuck in. It sounds too simple to work, but it fixes a surprising number of "dead" laptops.

3

Listen and look carefully

Press the power button and watch and listen. Can you hear a fan spinning? Does the keyboard light up even briefly? Is there any sound at all? If you hear a fan but see nothing on the screen, the laptop is running but the display is not showing anything, which is a different problem (and often easier to fix than a truly dead laptop).

4

Shine a torch on the screen

If the laptop makes noise when you press power but the screen stays black, shine a torch (or your phone's flashlight) at the screen from a steep angle. If you can faintly see the Windows logo or a cursor, the picture is there but the backlight is off. That is a repairable fault, not a broken laptop.

5

Try it with the charger only

Some laptops with worn-out batteries refuse to start from the battery alone but will start normally with the charger plugged in. Leave the charger connected for five minutes before pressing power. If it starts this way, the battery is at the end of its life and needs replacement, which is a straightforward fix.

Signs it might be something serious

Call us straight away if the laptop clicks, beeps or smells of burning when you press power. The same goes if liquid has been spilled on it recently. Do not keep trying to turn it on, as this can make things worse. Leave it off until we get there.

If the laptop starts but then freezes or crashes, the problem is different and our computer freezing guide is a better starting point. If it is simply very slow when it does finally start, try our slow laptop guide.

Your files are almost always safe

People often worry that a laptop that will not turn on means years of photos and documents have been lost. In the vast majority of cases, the files are still sitting safely on the hard drive inside and can be recovered even if the laptop itself cannot be repaired. We handle this as part of our computer help service and can move your files onto a replacement laptop if needed, so nothing gets left behind.

FAQ

Common questions about unresponsive laptops

The charging light is on but the laptop will not start. What does that mean?

That usually means the battery and charger are fine but the laptop is hung up somewhere between off and on. A hard reset (holding the power button for 30 seconds with the charger unplugged) clears this about two thirds of the time.

Are my files lost if my laptop will not start?

Almost certainly not. Even when a laptop refuses to start, the drive inside usually still has all your files on it. We can recover them during a visit and move them to a new computer if needed.

I hear a fan but the screen stays black. Is the screen broken?

Not necessarily. It can be a loose display cable, a stuck sleep mode, or the screen backlight. Shining a torch at the screen at an angle can tell you if the picture is there but unlit. We can diagnose this in one visit.
