Why is my Ring doorbell offline?
A Ring doorbell that has gone offline is frustrating, especially when you are expecting a delivery. The cause is usually one of a small number of things, and most are quick to sort.
Start by restarting your Wi-Fi router. Then open the Ring app and check the device health. If the Wi-Fi signal bar is low, the doorbell is probably too far from the router. If the battery icon is low, the doorbell simply needs charging. A factory reset is a last resort.

The five most common causes
-
Wi-Fi signal too weak at the front door
This is by far the most common cause. The doorbell is often at the furthest point of the house from the router, and Wi-Fi signal weakens through exterior walls. Open the Ring app, tap your doorbell, and look at the Device Health section. If the RSSI number is worse than -65 (closer to zero is better), signal is the problem. The fix is usually a mesh Wi-Fi system or an extender near the front of the house.
-
The battery has run down
Battery-powered Ring doorbells need recharging every few months, more often in winter when cold drains the battery faster. Unscrew the doorbell (usually one small security screw at the bottom), take it off the mount, and plug the micro-USB or USB-C cable into it indoors. It takes about 6 to 8 hours to fully charge. The doorbell stays registered to your account while charging, so there is nothing to reconfigure.
-
The Ring app needs updating
Ring pushes updates to the app regularly. An out-of-date app sometimes fails to communicate with the doorbell properly, which shows as offline even when the doorbell is fine. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android), search for Ring, and tap Update if one is available. Then close the app completely and reopen it.
-
Your router or Wi-Fi password changed
If you recently got a new router from your provider, changed your Wi-Fi password, or switched providers, your Ring doorbell will not know the new details. It needs to be set up on the new network through the Ring app. Open the app, tap the doorbell, tap Device Health, and tap Reconnect to Wi-Fi. Follow the steps. Our Wi-Fi dropping guide covers related router issues.
-
The doorbell itself needs a factory reset
If nothing else has worked, a factory reset clears the doorbell and lets you set it up fresh. Hold the orange button on the back of the doorbell for about 15 seconds until the front light flashes. Then open the Ring app and add the device again as if new. This is a last resort and is the point where most people call us instead. We handle it as part of a smart home visit.

Common questions about Ring doorbells
- How long should a Ring battery last?
Between two and six months, depending on how often it records. A busy street with frequent motion triggers drains the battery faster. Very cold weather also shortens battery life, so Durham Region homes often see shorter times in January and February than in summer.
- Can I run a wire to the doorbell so it never runs out of battery?
Yes. Most Ring doorbells can be hardwired to existing doorbell wiring if your home has it. This keeps the battery topped up so you never need to take the doorbell down. We can check during a visit whether your home has suitable wiring and install it properly if so.
- Will I lose my recorded footage if I reset the doorbell?
No. Ring stores recorded events in your Ring account in the cloud, not on the doorbell itself. A factory reset or new doorbell does not delete any videos. They are still available in the Ring app under the History tab.
