Why does my smart TV keep buffering?
Constant buffering is one of the most frustrating home tech problems. There are a few common causes and we can sort all of them out.
Buffering is almost always caused by a weak Wi-Fi signal reaching the TV, too many devices sharing the same connection, or the TV's software or streaming app needing an update. In most cases the fix does not involve changing your internet plan.
If your TV keeps buffering and you would rather have someone come and sort it out, give us a call and we can take care of it during a visit.
What might be causing it
The Wi-Fi signal is weak at the TV
Smart TVs are often placed at the far end of a room or behind a cabinet, which puts them far from the router. Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and through walls, which means the TV may not be getting a strong enough connection to stream smoothly even if other devices seem fine.
Too many devices are using the connection at once
Every device connected to your Wi-Fi shares the same bandwidth. If several phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices are all active at the same time, each one gets a smaller share of the connection. Streaming video uses more bandwidth than most other activities, so it feels the impact first.
The streaming app needs updating
Streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus release regular updates that fix bugs including buffering issues. If the app on your TV has not been updated in a while, an outdated version may be causing the problem.

Book a VisitThe TV's software is out of date
Smart TVs have their own operating system that receives updates from the manufacturer. An outdated TV software version can cause streaming performance problems even when the apps themselves are up to date.
The router needs a restart
Routers slow down over time and benefit from a regular restart. If the router has not been restarted in weeks or months, this can affect streaming quality across all devices.
The TV is connecting on the slower 2.4GHz network
Most modern routers broadcast two networks. The 5GHz network is faster but has shorter range. The 2.4GHz network travels further but is slower. If the TV is connecting to the 2.4GHz network when it could be using 5GHz, switching networks can make a noticeable difference.

Common questions about TV buffering
- Will I need to upgrade my internet plan to fix buffering?
Not necessarily. Most buffering problems are caused by Wi-Fi setup issues rather than internet speed. It is worth having the setup checked before paying for a faster plan.
- My TV buffers at night but not during the day. Why?
Evening is peak internet usage time in most neighbourhoods. More people streaming at the same time can slow down the connection. This can sometimes be improved by changing which network the TV connects to or by repositioning the router.
- Could the problem be with Netflix or the streaming service itself?
Occasionally yes. Streaming services experience their own technical issues. If the buffering happens on every app and not just one, the problem is more likely with your home Wi-Fi or TV setup rather than the service itself.
