Rogers modem blinking orange, red or white? What each light means.
The Rogers modem has one light on the front, and its colour tells you most of what you need to know. Here is what each one means and the one thing to try, straight from Rogers’ own support pages.
Solid white is good. Blinking white means setup is not finished. Orange or red means it has lost the connection: unplug it, wait, plug it back in, and give it five minutes. Orange and green taking turns means it is updating itself, so leave it alone for ten minutes. If it is still not white after that, check for an outage and then call Rogers.
Rogers now calls this box the Rogers Xfinity Gateway. Older paperwork says Ignite WiFi Gateway. It is the same device, and the lights work the same way on the Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 models. If you would rather we sort it out, give us a call.
What each light means and what to do
Solid white: online and working
Nothing to fix on the modem. If a device still cannot get online, the problem is the device or your Wi-Fi password. If you use your own router behind the modem, unplug both, plug the modem in first, and plug the router in only after the modem light turns white.
Blinking white: setup is not finished
The modem is working but has not been activated. Open the Rogers Xfinity app and finish the setup steps there. Do not unplug it while the app is working, which can take up to ten minutes.
Solid orange, amber or red: lost its connection
Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait at least five minutes for the light to turn white. Rogers lists solid red and solid amber together: both mean the network connection has dropped.
Blinking orange or amber: trying to find a signal
Check the cable that screws into the back of the modem. Tighten it finger-tight at both ends, including where it meets the wall. Then do the same unplug, wait, plug in, five-minute routine. If there is a splitter or booster between the wall and the modem that you do not need, remove it.
Blinking green: connecting to the Rogers network
Unplug for ten seconds, plug back in, and wait five minutes. Same cable checks as above. This one usually sorts itself out.
Orange and green taking turns: updating itself
Leave it alone. The modem is installing new software and will restart on its own. Rogers says to allow at least ten minutes, and up to twenty.
No light at all: no power
Check the power cord at both ends. If it is plugged into a power bar, make sure the bar is switched on, then try a different outlet.
Still not white after all that?

Book a VisitThe restart that fixes most things
Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in. Then wait a full five minutes before deciding anything. During those five minutes the light will go orange, then green, then white. People give up at the orange stage and restart again, which only starts the clock over. On fibre connections Rogers says it can take five to twenty minutes.
Do not press the small reset button on the back unless Rogers asks you to. That is a factory reset: it wipes your Wi-Fi name and password and you will have to set the modem up again from scratch.
When to call Rogers
First check whether there is an outage in your area at rogers.com/outage, or in the Rogers Xfinity app. If there is, nothing you do at home will help, and the light will fix itself when Rogers does. If there is no outage and the light is still orange, red or blinking after the steps above, contact Rogers support through rogers.com/support or the app. Have your account number from your bill ready.
If the internet drops every day at the same time, or the modem needs restarting every few days, that is worth a visit from us. A line problem outside the house, a tired cable, or a modem that is simply overheating in a cupboard all look the same from the light. Our Wi-Fi, TV and home setup visit covers all of it.

Common questions about the Rogers modem light
- Why is my Rogers modem light blinking orange?
It is trying to find a signal from Rogers and cannot. Tighten the cable at both ends, unplug the modem for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait five minutes. If it keeps blinking, check for an outage before calling Rogers.
- How long should I wait after restarting the modem?
At least five minutes. Rogers says a cable modem normally comes back within five minutes and a fibre connection can take up to twenty. If the light is orange and green by turns, it is updating: give it ten to twenty minutes and do not unplug it.
- Should I press the reset button on the back?
Not unless Rogers tells you to. The reset button wipes your Wi-Fi name and password and returns the modem to factory settings. The unplug-and-wait restart is almost always what is needed.
