Should I repair or replace my old laptop?
Some laptop problems cost $30 to fix and buy you years. Others are money down the drain. Here is how to tell which one you have.
Rough rule: under four years old, repair. Over seven, lean replace unless the fix is cheap. In between, it depends on what is broken: batteries, storage, and memory are cheap and worth doing; motherboards, hinges, and screens on budget laptops usually are not.

The cheap fixes that feel like a new laptop
A surprising number of "dying" laptops have one of three cheap problems. A worn battery is a modest part and turns a laptop that dies at lunch back into an all-day machine. A slow old hard drive is the single most common reason a laptop feels ancient: swapping it for a solid state drive is one of the cheapest upgrades in computing and often makes a seven-year-old laptop boot faster than it did new. Too little memory shows up as freezing when you have a few browser tabs open, and on many models adding more is quick. The expensive problems that usually mean replace
Motherboard faults, liquid damage, broken hinges that have cracked the case, and screens on budget laptops sit at the other end. The parts are expensive, the labour is long, and on an older machine you can easily spend more than the laptop is worth fixing one problem while three more wait their turn. There is one more factor for Windows laptops: support. Windows 10 no longer receives security updates, and many laptops made before about 2018 cannot officially run Windows 11. A machine that cannot get security updates is a poor place to do online banking, whatever shape its hardware is in. If your laptop falls in that group, put repair money toward a replacement instead, and we can move everything across so nothing is lost.
How to decide in two minutes
Ask three questions. What would the fix cost against the price of a decent replacement (our repair cost guide has real numbers)? Is the machine under four years old, over seven, or in the grey zone where the answer depends on the fault? And can it still get security updates? If the fix is under half the replacement price, the machine is under seven, and updates still flow, repair usually wins. Miss two of the three and replacement is nearly always the better spend.

- Can a solid state drive really make an old laptop fast again?
Yes, and it is the upgrade with the biggest payoff per dollar. If the laptop is otherwise healthy, an SSD plus a cleanup often buys three or more useful years.
- What happens to my old laptop if I replace it?
We move your files, photos, and accounts to the new machine first, then wipe the old drive properly so nothing personal leaves the house on it. Many retailers and the municipality take old electronics for recycling.
- My laptop cannot update to Windows 11. Is that urgent?
It matters most for anything involving passwords or banking. Without security updates, flaws stay unpatched. You do not need to panic, but plan the replacement rather than putting money into that machine.
